Thanksgiving with Louise

The family descended. They came from all across the country to be here on this day. Everyone brought something. Food was in abundance. Louise camped out in the living room during the pre-meal kitchen madness. When the time was right, we gathered for prayer, thanking God for life and love. Laughter and eating ensued. The cousins visited, the aunts and uncles reminisced, Louise smiled. She listened. She laughed. The tiredness we were expecting to show up…didn’t. The overwhelming frustration…never surfaced. She seemed content to sit back and watch…most of the time. After the meal was complete, she came and tried to help with the clean up. She was able to put some things away and I think that she felt useful, even though she is still unsteady on her feet. She tried to converse and was able to communicate much of the time. Her words were still confused, but the family was so supportive and encouraging it seemed not to bother her as much as usual. As fast as they came, they left, not wanting to wear her out. I asked her how her day went and she said, “I don’t know what today is, but the food was good and so were all the people.” I told her it was Thanksgiving and she said, “We will do it again next year.” Planning for the future. She hasn’t done that since her surgery. It was a good day…and for that I am truly thankful.
